Auckland District Health Board (Te Toka Tumai) is home to an internationally respected group of specialist cardiovascular services unique to Australasia. Together the Cardiovascular Directorate at ADHB provides the largest amount of complex surgeries and specialist cardiac and vascular services across New Zealand. These specialties include cardiovascular surgery and operating theatres, interventional cardiology, vascular surgery and specialist cardiovascular intensive care including a national ECMO service.

Overview of setting options for you to consider – expressing interest in more than one is fine!
Below is a brief summary of the specialty departments you can choose to express your interest in. You may have experience already in one area but want to grow your skills in another, and that is something we are glad to try and support! Once you have reviewed the options you can indicate in your application the specialties you would like to be considered for (our online application questions will guide you). Our nursing team will review your application and may even suggest additional areas you could consider when we respond to you.
Cardiology Nursing (Ward 31) - We offer an environment of patient centred care to national and local populations. We support this with a commitment to staff development of skills and knowledge that also includes rotational working within the cardiac care unit.
Cardiothoracic and Vascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) - CVICU leads New Zealand in providing specialised nursing care based on clinical skills, research, education and innovation. We are a 26 bed adult ICU which is the National Centre for Heart and Lung transplant, Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantations and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). We provide unique learning opportunities that you can’t get anywhere else in New Zealand. This is a 24 hour service based at Auckland City Hospital, covering primarily elective and acute admissions and provide our patients with intensive care for a range of cardiac, thoracic and vascular procedures.
We provide excellent professional development opportunities and on-going education along with the opportunity to apply for subsidised relevant postgraduate education. Being part of the team, we offer 12 hr shift rosters that give you better work life balance. Our comprehensive and robust orientation programme is built for supporting all new staff, with or without previous ICU experience. We provide a guided progression plan to senior leadership roles within our unit and throughout ADHB. Our dynamic peer support team is made up of health professionals from all over the globe helping you adjust to your new role as a nurse in New Zealand.
Vascular Services (Ward 41) -An opportunity to develop your acute surgical and interventional skills and be a part of the only purely vascular service in Australasia! In this exciting specialty you will be able to develop your acute surgical and assessment skills. You will be a member of a multidisciplinary, professional team committed to delivering quality care to Auckland’s vascular patients. We will offer an environment supporting professional development and further education and are particularly interested in expanding our team with registered nurses experienced from a surgical, medical or cardiac background.
Coronary Care Unit - Offers exciting challenges within a critical care environment practicing the latest in Nursing and Medical research/ evidenced-based care. We are an innovative team of professionals who will provide you with full orientation and on-going support to help you succeed in achieving your own professional goals. We are inviting applications from passionate registered nurses with a desire to deliver top quality patient care. You will be a Registered Nurse with a minimum of one-year experience in a New Zealand hospital (recent Acute General Medical or Surgical experience is advantageous). We provide comprehensive orientation and on-going support to all our new team members.
Cardiac Investigations unit - Be part of a vibrant multidisciplinary team. This unit is an acute care department specialising in a wide range of diagnostic and interventional procedures of varying complexities while caring for patients acutely and on a non-acute basis.
Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit (Ward 42) - Opportunity to gain cardiothoracic experience! Join our dedicated team of nurses in a stimulating and fast paced environment. You will be caring for patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery who have complex needs in an acute and challenging clinical setting. You will be a part of a supportive team working towards your continuing professional development and ideally, you will have previous cardiothoracic experience or recent surgical experience in an acute hospital setting.
ORL Theatres - ADHB’s ORL theatres are a Tertiary referral service operating in state of the art surroundings with a very supportive interdisciplinary team, who are committed to delivering excellence in quality of care to all our patients undergoing ORL surgery. Our Specialties includes Head & Neck, Maxillary Facial surgery, complex Airway (Laryngology), Otology and Rhinology. You will have the prospect to develop your clinical, technical and seek out your leadership potential. Our Orientation programme creates and encourages you to take up educational opportunities and experiences to help build your confidence by taking an active role in Simulation and LASER workshops.
Cardiothoracic Theatres – We offer state of the art surroundings with a supportive team committed to delivering excellence in quality of care to our patients. Our Cardiothoracic Operating Rooms; is the largest unit in the country for a wide range of Cardiothoracic Surgical procedures locally and regionally which includes Open Heart surgeries, Paediatric Cardiac and Congenital surgeries and Heart and Lung Transplantation We also have a highly innovative, world class Hybrid OR, which offers interventional radiological care utilising robotic Zeego.
